RESEARCH LINES (Supervisor B. Longoni)
1. TRANSPLANT RESEARCH LABORATORY
The Transplant Research Laboratory has been developed to allow in vitro
researcb projects mainly devoted to transplantation immunology.
The facility is located at the first floor of the Hospital unit and consist of a
full-equiped cell colture laboratory.
Several methods are available, including:
Laboratory staff is composed by research fellows and Ph.D. students from the Doctoral School in "SURGERY, BIOTECHNOLOGY AND IMMUNOLOGY of TRANSPLANTS" . The laboratory is also open to both medical and biology students .
STAFF:
The research activities are supported by grants from the following institutions: Italian Ministry of Education and Scientific Research (MIUR), ISTITUTO SUPERIORE DI SANITA' and FONDAZIONE ARPA.
Results of the research work have been published in indexed journals.

2. COMMON UNIT FOR EXPERIMENTAL SURGERY OF PISA (UCCS-PI)
The UCCS-PI is a research facility born by an agreement between the Clinical Phisiology of CNR and the Division of General Surgery of the University of Pisa to allow preclinical research projects on large animal models.
The Unit has been authorized by the Minister of Health to conduct research on cattle, sheeps , pigs and dogs according with the EC directives, regulated by the Italian DL.vo 116/92.
Since 1994 UCCS-PI is a recognized Validation Center for implantable dispositives by the Italian National Institute of Health.
The research facility includes an operating theatre with to operating tables, a
laboratory for chemical analysis and an intensive care unit.
3. LABORATORY FOR RESEARCHES IN SURGICAL ONCOLOGY
(by Luca E. Vannucci, MD)
THE LABORATORY
The Laboratory for Researches in Surgical Oncology was established in our Institute since
1987,after Dr. Luca Vannucci was trained in surgical research and experimental
carcinogenesis under the guide of Nobel Laureate Dr. Charles B. Huggins at the University
of Chicago (U.S.A.).
The laboratory is divided in three sections :
1. animal care for small animals (mice, rats, rabbits, guinea pigs) organized following the
guidelines of the EEC;
2. operating rooms, with possibility of microsurgery also with operative microscope;
3. histopathological laboratory for complete processing of the specimens, common
staining,histochemistry and immunohistochemistry.
In the Lab we developed and established an original model for colorectal carcinogenesis
in vivo in the rat that we usually use as main cancer model ( JEPTO 13(1):59-61,1994).

POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL ON "SURGERY, BIOTECHNOLOGY AND TRANSPLANT IMMUNOLOGY"
(Presidente: Prof. F. Mosca)Structure of the course
The course offers an integrated approach to transplantation research with an emphasis
on understanding transplant immunology at the cellular and molecular level.
The course lasts three academic years, commencing in November.
The course is comprised of two partss a taught component which includes lectures,
laboratory praticals, tutorials and students presentations, and a research component.
A full-time laboratory based research project will be carried out; the title of the
research project, discussed with the prospective project supervisor, will be made
available during the first year of the course.
On completation of the project a written thesis will be produced and submitted and
discussed with a national examing board to achieve the PhD degree.
Course Assessment
Entry examination comprises a written paper on transplantation immunology and an oral
exam, including knowlodge of a foreign language.
Continuous assessment is based on written assignments, reports and
presentations.
PhD Thesis will be submitted at the third year, by the end of February.
Applicatiom form
For the application form refer to "Gazzetta Ufficiale, serie speciale concorsi
per Dottorato di Ricerca" unusually published on August.
Entry qualifications
This degree is open to national graduated; EC scientists are invited to apply.
